Rožnov lies within a protected landscape, and as an environmental organisation, we care deeply about both the nature and culture of this region. Tourism has created important opportunities for conservation, because the municipality understands that the landscape must remain attractive if visitors are to keep coming.
This awareness has strengthened support for our work. The municipality helped establish an information centre where people can learn about nature and environmental issues. School groups visit the centre, and we often see children become genuinely curious about the problems the natural world faces and the possibilities for protecting it.
Tourism also brings money that can be invested in conservation. For that reason, we are not opposed to its continued development. We can even imagine some careful growth, provided it respects the limits of the protected area.
Tourism depends on this landscape, so every tourism investment should begin by asking what the landscape can safely carry.
The danger appears when short-term profit becomes more important than nature. Investors are already pressing for permission to build inside protected areas. Their plans may promise jobs and income, but once an important natural site is damaged, it cannot easily be restored.
Sometimes the power of money seems stronger than the power of nature. We hope the authorities will stop unsuitable developments before they begin. Tourists also have influence. They can refuse to support companies that build irresponsibly or treat a protected landscape simply as unused land waiting for construction.
We believe many visitors will understand this argument because nature is one of the main reasons they come here. They want clean air, forests, mountain scenery and wildlife. Protecting those things is not an obstacle to tourism; it is the condition that makes tourism possible.
Two activities cause particular concern: excessive private-car use and the pressure created by large numbers of skiers. Cars bring traffic, pollution and the need for more infrastructure. We ask visitors to use their own vehicles as little as possible and to choose public or shared transport where they can.
Winter sports also need responsible behaviour. Skiing can damage sensitive areas when visitors leave marked routes or when facilities expand without respecting ecological limits. We ask winter visitors to follow the guidance of responsible sports and conservation organisations.
Visitors come here because nature is still beautiful. Their choices can help ensure that the next visitor—and the next generation—finds it that way too.
Conservation works best when residents, businesses, government and tourists accept that they share responsibility. Environmental organisations cannot protect the region alone. Nor can rules succeed if people see them only as restrictions.
We want visitors to enjoy Rožnov. We also want tourism businesses to succeed and local people to have jobs. But those goals must be pursued within the boundaries set by nature, because crossing those boundaries would eventually harm everyone.
Tourism has a future in Rožnov only if the forests, mountains and protected places remain more valuable than the next construction project.
